A great link to differentiate between struts and ties, aside from what we have already done in class.

Grade 3 Parents and students,
On Friday February 8th we are inviting families to bring ice jewels to school!
Ice jewels are easy to make and so much fun to play with on our WEJ Winterlude Play Day. Have fun making them together this upcoming weekend.
To make ice jewels:
*dilute food colouring in water and mix in a separate jug prior to freezing
(This will prevent the colour from being too concentrated)
*pour coloured water into ice cube trays, plastic containers, yogurt cups and freeze
*send frozen ice jewels in with your child the morning of the 8th in a ziplock bag (we will put them out in the yard right away on arrival so that they stay frozen).

Once there, simply click on Chapter 7: 2-D Geometry, then complete the questions for each of the six lessons.
As we say goodbye to January, the month of extreme coldness and snow, brrrrrrrrr….. we look forward to February!
Valentines is on Thursday February 14th! The children are welcome to bring in Valentine’s cards for their friends on Valentine’s day… the 14th.
(Please send the cards in a little ziplock bag (labelled) in his/her backpack on that day only.)
If your child would like to give Valentines’ cards, (it is optional but the children really love doing this) you may purchase these cards at the dollar store or Walmart, or you and your child can make little heart cards too, out of paper, foam shapes, newspaper, etc. Be creative!
Writing 19 Valentine’s day cards can be a big job! I would suggest start this early. Do a few cards each night! Hence the reason I am sending this little memo out now.
I just ask that if you choose to do this activity, your child will send in a card for everyone. We have 19 friends in total.
Here is a list of all of the students names in our class:
Any questions, or comments or worries, send me an email back!
Take care and stay warm!

Your child can prepare for the science test by reviewing and answering the questions below:
Write definitions for the following words: structure, strength, stability, load.
Make a list of three natural structures and three man-made structures.
In class, we did an experiment with cardboard tubes of different heights. What did we learn about stability by doing this experiment?
In class, we tried to build towers out of 50 cue cards. What were two things that the winning group did well with their tower design to make it so tall and stable?
In class, we did an experiment with pasta noodles and marshmallows. What did you learn about strength from that experiment? How can you reinforce, or make structures stronger? What are struts and ties? What force does each deal with?
What properties of material do you need to consider when building the following: a) a car tire; b) a backpack; c) a roof for a house in Kanata, d) a baseball bat.
What will students have to consider if they want to do well in our in-class structure-building group challenge later this week? How will they make their structure strong and stable? Use words like: struts, ties, cross-bracing, layers, pillars, posts, beams, balanced, materials, tension, compression, torsion, base/foundation, etc. in your answer.
The Primary team is looking for 3 parent volunteers to come in from 12- 1pm on Friday, February 8th to help make and distribute Hot Chocolate to our kiddos when they all come in from the WEJ Winterlude outdoor play day that is in the planning works now. Please email me if you are free.
With appreciation,
Ms. Lewis
