October 28th – Virtual Field Trip: Money & Math!

Virtual Field Trip to the Bank of Canada Museum 🇨🇦

I am writing to inform you that our class will be participating in an engaging virtual field trip to the Bank of Canada Museum on Tuesday, November 28th at 9:20am during our regular school hours. This is an excellent opportunity for students to connect our in-class learning about money, history and math with a real-world institution. The session will take place virtually.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this virtual trip, students will be able to:

  • Define money and state the five common characteristics of money.
  • Reflect on the form money takes and discover some current and past forms.
  • Explore Canada’s current bank notes and coins, getting to know their values and symbolism.
  • Identify the security features of a Canadian bank note.

Curriculum Links

This trip directly supports several areas of our curriculum:

Social Studies: Historical use of money in civilization; Money used throughout Canadian history; Symbolism that represents Canada.

Health & Math-Financial Literacy: Understanding money’s impact on society; Building a healthy relationship with finances and money.

Thank you for your continued support of our learning initiatives.

An End of Week Update

Tomorrow is the BIG day! Our Terry Fox Run will start at 3:05 in the afternoon. If you still want to help Terry Fox raise money for cancer research, you can bring in a Toonie for Terry tomorrow. Don’t forget to wear your Terry Fox t-shirts tomorrow if you have one. Thanks again for your support.

6 students have not yet filled out their media permission form, so I cannot take or post photos of them. If you do not want your child involved in photo opportunities, you still have to click on the DO NOT CONSENT button in the link. Here is the link:

ACCEPTABLE USE OF TECHNOLOGY:https://forms.ocdsb.ca/Forms/Use-of-Technology

I spoke with students yesterday regarding homework in Grade 3. Knowledgehook and Readworks assignments will be posted live Monday mornings and are due the following week on Sunday at 5pm.

The students worked on a separate Google Classroom Data assignment this week and were taught how to “turn in” work, how to find due dates and how to edit slides and answer questions using text boxes and drag and drop.

Hoping everyone has a lovely Thanksgiving Weekend, a friendly reminder, there is no school on Monday.

Kindly,

Ms. Lewis

Upcoming Virtual Presentation: ‘Dog Buddies’ with the Ottawa Humane Societ

During the Dog Buddies presentation, students will:

  • Learn how to safely approach dogs and practice bite-prevention strategies through role-playing.

  • Explore the importance of showing respect and empathy for animals, including service animals and pets.

  • Participate in a live Q&A session with an OHS educator to build on their understanding.

  • Enjoy a virtual animal meet-and-greet with some of the Humane Society’s animal residents!

Connection to the Ontario Curriculum

This presentation directly supports the Grade 3 Health Curriculum, specifically the Personal Safety and Injury Prevention unit. In this unit, students are expected to:

  • Identify and apply safety practices in a variety of environments (home, school, community, and online).

  • Demonstrate appropriate behaviour around animals, including guide dogs and service animals.

By learning how to act safely and respectfully around dogs, students will build essential life skills that contribute to their overall safety and well-being.

Why This Learning Matters

Animal safety is an important part of children’s personal safety education. Understanding how to approach dogs calmly and respectfully helps prevent accidents, such as bites, and fosters positive relationships between people and animals. Beyond safety, humane education promotes key life skills such as:

  • Empathy and sensitivity toward others.

  • Responsibility and respect for living beings.

  • Compassion and kindness which extend into community life.

Through programs like Dog Buddies, students gain not only practical safety strategies but also a deeper appreciation for animals and the important roles they play in our lives.

We are looking forward to this exciting and meaningful learning opportunity for our class!

Reminder: Scholastic Book Orders Due Friday

This is a reminder that Scholastic Book Orders for September/October should be made online by this Friday (if you and your child are interested in ordering new books to read).  The books should arrive in my classroom by the end of next week (hopefully!). I have already received 5 orders.

Scholastic Book F air | Butler Acres Elementary School

Each month, your child will receive flyers from the Scholastic Book Club. The book orders are coming home today. This will provide you with the opportunity to purchase high-quality books, activities, and computer software at very competitive prices. Our classroom will also benefit from your purchases, as we will receive free books and educational resources when orders are placed! For students thinking about going into Middle French Immersion next year, there are excellent French books also available for purchase.

Scholastic Book Club offers a variety of books that are appropriate for your child’s reading level and interests. There are often many books on the topics of the units we study in science, social studies and other subjects. Books are great gifts for children and for other members in the family.

When ordering, please order ONLINE ONLY using class code : RC199370

If you find receiving the orders a nuisance or you never have intentions of buying from Scholastic please feel free to reply to this post or shoot me a private email indicating you do not want the flyers coming home.

Many thanks,

Ms. Lewis

Meet Miss Maelie

Hello everyone,

I am so excited to be joining the grade 3 classroom this fall as part of my high school co-op! My name is Maëlie Lal, and I am currently in grade 11. I will be here until January 16, and during that time I will have the chance to learn from the students as well as support them in their learning.

Working with children has always been something I have enjoyed, and I hope to one day become a teacher myself. This placement gives me the opportunity to see what life in the classroom is like on a daily basis, and I am really looking forward to building positive connections with the students.

I feel very lucky to be working alongside Mrs. Lewis during my time here. I know I will learn a lot from her experience, and I am excited to support her in the classroom while also gaining skills that will help me in the future.

Sincerely,

Maëlie Lal

Upcoming Opportunity – WOSC Coming to WEJ

We are very excited to welcome WOSC Soccer coaches to W. Erskine Johnston Public School on Wednesday, October 8th. All Primary students will get to work with a coaching member to develop and learn new, practical and technical soccer skills and to have fun.  These sessions will take place from 12:00 – 12:30pm for our R3B class. Please dress your child for the outdoors and in proper athletic footwear.

Knowledgehook: A Great Way to Practice and Reinforce Math Skill

Throughout the school year, our class will use Knowledgehook for various math assignments in class and at home. Students are expected to complete all assigned missions throughout the year to reinforce math learning in the classroom. Some class time will be allocated to complete assigned missions, but since we only have eight classroom Chromebooks to share, students will also need some time at home. Students will have lots of time to complete each mission. Due dates will be very reasonable.

By staying connected, we can share your child’s achievements and progress with you so you can stay informed and support your child. (Today, the students practiced logging in to Knowledgehook on the class Chromebooks using their Google account information.

Students:
1. Students can access Knowledgehook from home. In our Google Classroom, under Classwork and Important Information, click the link (joinkh.com) to access the Knowledgehook website and complete assigned missions. Log in with Google.
2. The Class Code is 162 0951, but you do not need it when you log in with Google.
3. At school, your Google login information should be kept in your desk if you need to refer to it to log into the Chromebooks.

Thank YOU So Much for Coming!

It was so lovely to see almost all of our families come out to Meet the Teacher last night!

The Friendship Directory that you filled out last night has been copied and is being sent home tonight along with OCDSB login information.

Some parents missed filling out the link for the Media Release Form and Consent to Use Technology in the Classroom Appropriately. Here they are again if you missed them:

These forms must be completed before students will be able to access technology at school. Please note that these are two separate
forms.
