Upcoming Virtual Presentation: ‘Dog Buddies’ with the Ottawa Humane Societ
During the Dog Buddies presentation, students will:
-
Learn how to safely approach dogs and practice bite-prevention strategies through role-playing.
-
Explore the importance of showing respect and empathy for animals, including service animals and pets.
-
Participate in a live Q&A session with an OHS educator to build on their understanding.
-
Enjoy a virtual animal meet-and-greet with some of the Humane Society’s animal residents!
Connection to the Ontario Curriculum
This presentation directly supports the Grade 3 Health Curriculum, specifically the Personal Safety and Injury Prevention unit. In this unit, students are expected to:
-
Identify and apply safety practices in a variety of environments (home, school, community, and online).
-
Demonstrate appropriate behaviour around animals, including guide dogs and service animals.
By learning how to act safely and respectfully around dogs, students will build essential life skills that contribute to their overall safety and well-being.
Why This Learning Matters
Animal safety is an important part of children’s personal safety education. Understanding how to approach dogs calmly and respectfully helps prevent accidents, such as bites, and fosters positive relationships between people and animals. Beyond safety, humane education promotes key life skills such as:
-
Empathy and sensitivity toward others.
-
Responsibility and respect for living beings.
-
Compassion and kindness which extend into community life.
Through programs like Dog Buddies, students gain not only practical safety strategies but also a deeper appreciation for animals and the important roles they play in our lives.
We are looking forward to this exciting and meaningful learning opportunity for our class!
Reminder: Scholastic Book Orders Due Friday
This is a reminder that Scholastic Book Orders for September/October should be made online by this Friday (if you and your child are interested in ordering new books to read). The books should arrive in my classroom by the end of next week (hopefully!). I have already received 5 orders.

Each month, your child will receive flyers from the Scholastic Book Club. The book orders are coming home today. This will provide you with the opportunity to purchase high-quality books, activities, and computer software at very competitive prices. Our classroom will also benefit from your purchases, as we will receive free books and educational resources when orders are placed! For students thinking about going into Middle French Immersion next year, there are excellent French books also available for purchase.
Scholastic Book Club offers a variety of books that are appropriate for your child’s reading level and interests. There are often many books on the topics of the units we study in science, social studies and other subjects. Books are great gifts for children and for other members in the family.
When ordering, please order ONLINE ONLY using class code : RC199370
If you find receiving the orders a nuisance or you never have intentions of buying from Scholastic please feel free to reply to this post or shoot me a private email indicating you do not want the flyers coming home.
Many thanks,
Ms. Lewis
Meet Miss Maelie

Hello everyone,
I am so excited to be joining the grade 3 classroom this fall as part of my high school co-op! My name is Maëlie Lal, and I am currently in grade 11. I will be here until January 16, and during that time I will have the chance to learn from the students as well as support them in their learning.
Working with children has always been something I have enjoyed, and I hope to one day become a teacher myself. This placement gives me the opportunity to see what life in the classroom is like on a daily basis, and I am really looking forward to building positive connections with the students.
I feel very lucky to be working alongside Mrs. Lewis during my time here. I know I will learn a lot from her experience, and I am excited to support her in the classroom while also gaining skills that will help me in the future.
Sincerely,
Maëlie Lal
Upcoming Opportunity – WOSC Coming to WEJ
We are very excited to welcome WOSC Soccer coaches to W. Erskine Johnston Public School on Wednesday, October 8th. All Primary students will get to work with a coaching member to develop and learn new, practical and technical soccer skills and to have fun. These sessions will take place from 12:00 – 12:30pm for our R3B class. Please dress your child for the outdoors and in proper athletic footwear.
Knowledgehook: A Great Way to Practice and Reinforce Math Skill
Throughout the school year, our class will use Knowledgehook for various math assignments in class and at home. Students are expected to complete all assigned missions throughout the year to reinforce math learning in the classroom. Some class time will be allocated to complete assigned missions, but since we only have eight classroom Chromebooks to share, students will also need some time at home. Students will have lots of time to complete each mission. Due dates will be very reasonable.
By staying connected, we can share your child’s achievements and progress with you so you can stay informed and support your child. (Today, the students practiced logging in to Knowledgehook on the class Chromebooks using their Google account information.
Students:
1. Students can access Knowledgehook from home. In our Google Classroom, under Classwork and Important Information, click the link (joinkh.com) to access the Knowledgehook website and complete assigned missions. Log in with Google.
2. The Class Code is 162 0951, but you do not need it when you log in with Google.
3. At school, your Google login information should be kept in your desk if you need to refer to it to log into the Chromebooks.
Thank YOU So Much for Coming!
It was so lovely to see almost all of our families come out to Meet the Teacher last night!
The Friendship Directory that you filled out last night has been copied and is being sent home tonight along with OCDSB login information.
Some parents missed filling out the link for the Media Release Form and Consent to Use Technology in the Classroom Appropriately. Here they are again if you missed them:
These forms must be completed before students will be able to access technology at school. Please note that these are two separate
forms.

Terry Fox School Run – Friday, October 10t
Terry Fox is a significant figure in Canadian history. His Marathon of Hope has raised over $900 million and funded 1,300 innovative cancer research projects, bringing hope and health to millions of Canadians. This year, the staff and students of W. Erskine Johnston P.S. will once again participate in the Terry Fox School Run on Fri, October 10th, from 3:05 p.m. to 3:35 p.m. Last year, we raised an amazing $6,640.00! Our goal is to do even better this year!
Once again, we are collecting donations for our School Terry Fox Run. When you buy a new Terry Fox shirt (Youth – $25 and adults – $30), all of the proceeds are added to our fundraising total and go directly to The Terry Fox Foundation. They are also available in French this year! Orders must be placed by Sunday, September 28th. This year’s 45th anniversary Terry Fox Run shirt features the Finish It logo—symbolizing our shared commitment to help finish Terry’s marathon against cancer. On the back of the shirt, Terry runs ahead—seen from behind, leading millions of people to carry forward his fight against cancer.
It would be amazing to see everyone wearing their Terry Fox shirts during our School Terry Fox Run on Friday, October 10th!
Thank you for your support!

Data Analysis
Over the next few weeks in Math, your child will be learning how to design surveys to collect data; sort and organize data using Venn and Carroll diagrams and tally charts; represent data by creating pictographs and bar graphs with scales of 2, 5, and 10; and describe, interpret, and analyze bar graphs, pictographs, and circle graphs. Your child will explore what makes a survey question good, how best to organize and display a given data set, and what sorts of things a graph can tell us.
Throughout this time, you and your child can practice some activities such as the following:
- Your child can count some items that come in large quantities (e.g., straws) and create a pictograph with a scale of 10 to represent the items.
- Your child can design a question, conduct a survey, tally the results, and display the data in a bar graph. For example, they could ask, “How many of my books do I want to read or read again: soon, someday, or never?” and then interpret the results.
- Your child could look in the media for examples of bar graphs with scales and tell you 3 or 4 things the graph shows. The scale might be larger than 10; they could discuss why the scale used is appropriate.
- When sharing a circular item, such as a pie, encourage your child to compare the sizes of slices (cut from the centre), similar to a circle graph.
I will assign math review questions in Google Slides on sorting and surveys in Google Classroom soon. (Students will be sharing our class set of Chromebooks, which we just received.) Please remind your child to check Google Classroom for important updates and any assigned work. (Students will be joining my Google Classroom over the coming days.) I will also post missions in Knowledgehook online related to our math unit on data analysis for students to complete (at school and at home). (Knowledgehook login information coming soon!)
Students got their passwords to learn how to log into Google Classroom at home and school today!
Virtual Presentation on Tuesday
With our Annual Terry Fox Run happening on October 10th this year, we are gearing kids up for excitement to participate by hosting a virtual presentation with an actual Terry Fox Ambassador on Tuesday morning (Sept. 16th) from 9:30am – 10am. Here are some further details:
Presenter: Terry Fox Ambassador
Hosts: Terry Fox Foundation Moderator
Content: Join our dynamic and engaging Terry Fox Ambassador to learn all about Terry’s life and legacy. In this special 45th anniversary year, your students will be inspired through a multimedia presentation to raise valuable funds for cancer research and go the distance with your school event, just like Terry! This year’s theme, “Finish It,” honours Terry’s mission and challenges all of us to help finish what he started. Kick off or wrap up your Terry Fox School Run with this amazing presentation and watch the momentum for your event and incredible school spirit soar. You’ll be joining other schools coast to coast to coast, uniting the country just as Terry did. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a 10-minute Q&A following the presentation. The presenter will do their best to answer as many questions as possible. Suitable for all grade levels.
