Students are busy and so excited to be preparing for our in-school Remembrance Day Assembly. Students will need to wear black pants/skirts and a white top
(any kind) with a poppy. I know November 11th is a while away, but Mr. Jackson and I want the students to be fully prepared. They are really taking the role of performing at the assembly passionately.
They can practice the song this weekend with these lyrics https://youtu.be/8B8vuFngtrU?si=f0yHN_SIXJpLVeDM
We have just started incorporating these hand gestures into the song too: https://youtu.be/FRwvA5nLugY?si=RowjwG9OGg_ChyZm
Litterless Lunch Initiative at WEJ
How you pack your child’s lunch every day can really make a difference!
All classes at WEJ are encouraged to take on a waste-free (litterless) lunch initiative. We have talked about this initiative as a class already. I encourage active and regular participation from all students and parents in reducing waste in our classroom and school. Remember…foods high in sugar (candy, pop, etc.) are discouraged. Healthy choices are encouraged!
What is a Waste-Free (Litterless) Lunch?
A lunch that contains no throwaway packaging and produces no waste. Food and drinks are packed in reusable containers, avoiding, where possible, the use of prepackaged foods. Note: If there IS any packaging in your child’s lunch, it should be brought back home.
Many schools across Ontario have adopted Waste-Free Lunches as a way to make a positive impact on our environment. The primary objective of this program is to encourage parents and students to reflect on and consider the way they prepare and package lunch foods. It also teaches students about the environmental consequences of waste and allows them to apply their knowledge in their daily lives.
Up Coming Virtual Presentations:
On Tuesday, November 28th we will take part in a Virtual presentation “All About Money” put on by the Bank of Canada. Student will engage in learning about Financial Literacy that is now firmly embedded in our Ontario Curriculum.
On the 29th, the Ontario Science Museum is engaging us with “Frightfully Fun” Science Experiments. Their curriculum link line is “Join us on a frightfully fun exploration of energy! Get ready for some spooky fun with pumpkin electricity, mysterious shadows, and eerie music. Join us and uncover how energy can light up the night!”
In Language, we have been studying the 5 components of the Friendly Letter and have been writing our own Wacky Letters! We are reading Frindle as our class read-aloud and are finding our work on learning how to write cursive calming and quiet. Everyone is taking their cursive letter writing very seriously. Next week we will hone our persuasive letter writing skills. In Grammar we just wrapped up our learning on contractions and made “bat contractions” and next week will look at the difference in using a and an properly.
Social Studies: We are wrapping up our Unit on Communities in Canada. We will have a short online, google form quiz next week. We will then explore Forces in Motion in Science.
In Math,
We’re diving into the world of Numbers to 1000 this week and next. This unit is foundational for developing a strong sense of place value and number magnitude, which are crucial skills for all future mathematical concepts.
Your child will be engaging in several key areas to build their understanding of three-digit numbers. Here’s a quick look at what we’ll be covering:
Key Learning Goals 🎯:
- Ordering Numbers: Your child will learn how to arrange numbers to 1000 from least to greatest and greatest to least. This requires comparing the digits in the hundreds, tens, and ones places.
- Identifying Greater Than/Less Than: Students will confidently compare any two numbers up to 1000 using the symbols > (greater than), < (less than), and = (equal to).
- Rounding Numbers: We’ll be introducing the concept of rounding to the nearest ten and the nearest hundred. This skill helps students estimate and check the reasonableness of their answers in future calculations.
- Representing Numbers in Five Ways: This is a major focus and a fantastic way for students to solidify their understanding of a number’s composition.
| Way to Represent |
Description |
Example for 435 |
| 1. Standard Form |
The common way to write a number using digits. |
435 |
| 2. Expanded Form |
Breaking the number down to show the value of each digit. |
400 + 30 + 5 |
| 3. Number Words |
Writing the number out completely in words. |
Four hundred thirty-five |
| 4. Numerals and Words |
Using a mix of digits and words (often used to clearly state the value of the hundreds/tens/ones). |
4 hundreds, 3 tens, and 5 ones |
| 5. Modelling/Sketching |
Drawing a model, usually using Base Ten Blocks (squares for hundreds, sticks for tens, small dots/circles for ones). |
