So Proud!!!!
This BUSY Week-at-a-Glance

What a busy week ahead in room 216. The kids are a buzz with working on their holiday crafts, prepping for their big number in the holiday concert and tying up loose ends with our patterning unit in Math. Today, we had 3 wonderful Biography presentations from the Gr. 3s, with the rest to go tomorrow. As well, our Gr.2s spoke about their family traditions and celebrations today.
Friendly reminder to send your child to school on Wednesday in a white shirt and dark, preferably black pants.
Parents coming to the concert please arrive a bit early to ensure yourself a parking spot as well as a good seat. WE are extending our food drive for the Kanata Food Cupboard and you are more than welcome to bring a canned food item when you come if you wish. Boxes will be placed outside the gym doors on your way in.
There is No homework duotang this week for the grade 3’s! Instead, students can prepare for a math test on patterning that will be given this Thursday. Students can complete the following online quizzes at Nelson Math 3 to help prepare for the test: Lesson 1: Repeating Shape Patterns; Lesson 2: Exploring Patterns, Lesson 3: Patterns in 100 Chart; and Lesson 4: Patterns in T-Charts. We will also be completing these online quizzes and doing review questions from our text book in class leading up to Thursday’s test.
Our grade 2’s will be having a one-on-one oral “hands on patterning” assessment that will be evaluated through demonstration of their knowledge and understanding with the use of patterning block manipulatives. This will be done sporadically through the week and will be sent home by the weeks end.
On Friday morning, we will be welcoming a very special guest to WEJ– Mr. Brian Johnson, a real-life structural engineer! Mr. Johnson’s engineering firm was responsible for the design of our school’s recent four-classroom extension! During his presentation under Mr. Jackson’s supervision, Mr. Johnson will be sharing with the grade three students his love of structural engineering and what makes his job so interesting. He will also bring and discuss many photos of various buildings that he has designed in the Ottawa area. What a great way to learn about strong and stable structures – from an expert! The Gr. 3 students are in for a treat! At the same time I will be working one-on-one with the Gr. 2’s to wrap up their Traditions and Celebrations scrapbook for full term 1.
The kids are in great spirits and are super excited for this week and I am sure their holidays too. Tonight ask your child about the book we are studying in class this week. Their eyes were bright eyed and bushy tailed as we leaped from page to page today!
THANK YOU!
We have had many donations come in this week for our Kanata Food Cupboard holiday drive! Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you! Please remember that you have until Dec. 14th to donate hygiene products (soap, body wash, hair care products, tooth paste, face wash etc.).
Your support is greatly appreciated!
Thank you.
Progress Reports TODAY
The students will be receiving their Progress Reports today. Please remember that this report is only a snapshot of your child’s academic and learning skills and that the reporting period is from Sept. 8th to Oct. 30th, 2015. Much progress has been made since then! Please take some time tonight to review the report with your child. Also, please sign and return the bottom portion of the second page.
Excitement for Tomorrow …
Dear Parents,
This week have been doing a book study on The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg and doing follow up activities based on the story. Tomorrow, later during the day the children will get to watch the actual movie The Polar Express.
Tomorrow your child will be able to wear pajamas or robes and slippers. The slippers can only be worn inside the classroom. Your child must wear his/her school shoes to school. The slippers must be carried to school.
The kids are super excited about tomorrow, please help them get organized in the morning with their outfit.
Sunglasses …
Good sunny and warm Thursday morning! Can you please pack your child’s sunglasses in their back pack tomorrow. We are using them as a prop for our Holiday concert performance and do not want to leave it to last minute to accumulate them. I will label them with masking tape and leave them in a locked cupboard each night until after the performance. Thank you for your support! It is going to be a great show!
Gr. 2 Social Studies Project Coming Home
You will notice that your child is bringing home their blue “Traditions and Celebration Carousel” tonight. In class today they glued on their ‘good copy’ writing of information. This weekend they are asked, with your help hopefully, to print off, draw or use real photographs of themselves enjoying their holiday and tradition or images that pertain to the holiday that they have written about. Please have your son/daughter practice reading their information to you as each child will present to the other children in the class.
The kids have been working so hard this week adding finishing touches to their family trees and perfecting their writing strategies for this summative project. I am so proud of each one of them!
Friendly Reminder …
