The Spirit of Giving …

Image result for holiday image  Dear Grade Three Parents,

This year, our school has once again taken the initiative to get into the festive spirit by supporting The Kanata Food Cupboard. In collaboration with one another, the classes will be making many Christmas wishes come true for many families. The following is what the Grade 3 classes have been asked to collect:

  •  Hygiene Products (eg. deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream, toothpaste, toothbrushes, bubble bath, Q-tips, soap, facewash, nail clippers, hand sanitizer, mouthwash, hair spray, nail polish etc.) or gift cards for us to put towards the purchase of these items.

Participation in this initiative is voluntary. However, we are hoping to be able to achieve our goal of providing these items to families in need in our area. All donations need to be made between

Dec. 1st and Dec. 14th and can be sent in with your child to the classroom.

Please help make a less fortunate family’s Christmas dreams come true!

Thanks in advance for your support.

Sincerely,

Ms. Lewis

This Week at a Glance

As it is a short week this week, there will be no homework duotang for our Gr. 3s! All students should use the extra time this week to prepare for a quick math quiz on money which will be given on Monday, Nov. 23rd. To do this, go to Nelson Math 3 – Try It Out – Chapter 2 – Numeration and try the following two practice tests: Lesson 8: Counting and Trading Coins and Lesson 9: Trading Bills. Students can also go over the money related activities at Grade Three Under the Sea or play some of the links to online money games under Math – Numeration on the right-hand side of this page.

Gr. 2s :

In approximately one week, our grade 2s will have a science quiz. The quiz will be done orally. Children will be asked the questions and their verbal answers will be marked. Below you will find a copy of the quiz. All of these answers are in your child’s Science duotang. Duotangs will be coming home Wednesday and Friday night this week.

1. What is matter?

2. Name five examples of matter.

3. What is a solid?

4. Name five examples of a solid.

5. What happens when you break a solid? (check out our experimental findings)

6. What is a liquid?

7. Name five examples of a liquid.

8. Please name these four safety symbols. (You will have to name the four safety symbols from your worksheet page that I already marked.)

Parent-Teacher Interviews

Just a friendly reminder that this Friday, November 20th is a Professional Activity Day. Some parent-teacher interviews will take place this Thursday evening and Friday morning. I have already contacted the parents that I would like to meet this time around. If you have not been contacted, a meeting is not needed at this time. If you would like to formally meet me for the first time, please send me an email.

Please note that Elementary Progress Reports will be issued for all students in grades 1 through 8 on December 10, 2015. These reports will cover the regular fall reporting period, from the first day of school through to October 30th, 2015. The reports will include information about your child’s progress, as well as teacher comments.

Do you have any paper towel tubes?

We are in need of paper towel or wrapping paper tubes (EMPTY rolls, not the ones with paper towel still around it).  We do not need toilet paper tubes. We will be using the paper towel tubes for a few activities throughout our Gr. 3 science unit on strong and stable structures. This unit will be starting at the end of the week. Collect as many tubes as you can…aunts, uncles, grandparents, even friends’ houses! (take care of the recycling for them for a while) and send them in with your child. THANKS for your help!

It was a busy but heart felt day in Grade 2/3 today! We attended a beautiful ceremony in the gym at 10:15 this morning where our wreath bearers Cameron & Monica proudly laid our wreath. Then we returned to class our grade 3s worked on their Remembrance Day watercolour art while our Gr. 2s wrote beautiful across tick poems as a follow up to our read alouds, Bunny the Brave War Horse and A Poppy is to Remember. Tomorrow we will continue preparations for our Readers Theatre skits (oral/visual assessment) on our book study A Bear in War. Please ask your child what prop or costume help they may need. You may have seen the planning sheet come home.

Soccer Reminder…

I am so appreciative that so many of you have already sent in your child’s $6.00 for our soccer workshops. Here is a friendly reminder about this exciting opportunity at WEJ!

We are very excited to welcome a former professional soccer player, Kevin Nelson to W. Erskine Johnston Public School. Mr. Nelson has played at the National and International Level. He was the top goal scorer in the Canadian Professional Soccer League and earned the title of Rookie of the Year in 2001. He is well known in the Ottawa Soccer community.

Youth Soccer can be an exciting and fun opportunity for your child to learn new, practical and technical soccer skills and to have fun. Kevin Nelson will be running three sessions for each Grade 1, 2 and 3 class. These sessions will take place on Tuesday, November 17th, Tuesday, November 24th and Tuesday, December 1st. The focus of these soccer sessions will be on basic soccer skills, including ball skills, balance and agility. All activities undertaken during these sessions will be in accordance with OPHEA guidelines and the expectations are directly related to the respective grade physical education curriculum.

The cost for all three sessions is $6.00 per student. Payment can be made by cheque, made out to W. Erskine Johnston PS, or by cash (exact amount please). It is appreciated that payment be made to your child’s classroom teacher by Friday, November 13th. Please ensure your child is dressed for fun, physical, indoor activity on the above mentioned days.

We are looking forward to learning and improving our soccer skills !

Gr. 2 Family Tree Project

Coming home tonight is a new Social Studies project for the Grade twos. When I introduced it to them today they were super excited to get started! Please check your child’s agenda for the following note and the family sheets that need your guidance.  We will be creating the actual trees and do the labeling and pasting of the photos at school.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As part of the Grade 2 Social Studies curriculum, the students will be learning about their family’s history and creating a family tree.

Your son/daughter will be conducting a home interview and using the information collected to create a family tree. It is very important that your son/daughter record the information him/herself. He/She must be able to read his/her printing and to understand the information recorded. The attached interview sheets are due back to school on Monday, November 16th, 2015.

Your son/daughter is also encouraged to bring in photographs of each family member to include on his/her family tree. Photos of individual family members will be easier to work with than group photos. Please note that these photographs will be cut and pasted onto your son/daughter’s family tree and will not be returned in their original condition. Please label all photographs with the name of the family member and place in a sealed ziplock bag.

Thank you for your assistance with this project!

Ms. Lewis

Picture Retake Day

Say Cheese…again! Just a reminder that school photo retakes are Thursday, November 12th. Please send your child dressed in their best and ensure that they have their first envelope of pictures with them.

Scholastic Book Orders Are Back!

Each month, your child will receive flyers from the Scholastic Book Club. This will provide you with the opportunity to purchase high-quality books, activities, and computer software at very competitive prices. Our classroom will also benefit from your purchases, as we will receive free books and educational resources when orders are placed!

Scholastic Book Club offers a variety of books that are appropriate for your child’s reading level and interests. There are often many books on the topics of the units we study in science and social studies and other subjects. Books are great gifts for children and for other members in the family.

When ordering, please make a cheque payable to Scholastic Canada Ltd. Scholastic NO longer accepts cash at all. Please return the book order and cheque in a sealed envelope with your child’s name written on the front. You can expect delivery of your order in approximately 1 week from the order date. November’s book orders and payment are due no later than Monday, Nov. 30th. I would like to get the orders in on time as I know these books make for popular Christmas gifts for children, nieces and nephews.

Gr. 3 Social Studies Summative Assignment

Social Studies Project – Create a Brochure for a Community in Ontario

brochure-clipart-brochure-clipart1We are wrapping up our social studies unit about living and working in Ontario. As a culminating task, students have been working with a partner or in a group of three to create a BROCHURE on research they have conducted on one of the following communities in Ontario: Ottawa, Toronto, Niagara Falls, Sudbury, Thunder Bay, or Hamilton.

Tomorrow, students will continue working on their research sheet with their group and brainstorm things that they already know about their chosen community (using their notes from previous unit lessons as well as previous class discussions). Some time will also be spent on the school’s Chromebooks to research information online. We will discuss the research sheet and brainstorm ideas as a class.

The following areas MUST be covered in the brochure:

– Population

– Type of Community – rural, urban, suburban, mining, manufacturing, tourist, etc.

– How is the land used? -farming, building, houses, recreation, nature reserves, roads, parking lots, etc.

– What kinds of job opportunities are available in the community? For example, we have talked about how in Ottawa there are many people who work in the government and in high-tech. We have also talked about how there are lots of other types of jobs like: teacher, doctor, electrician, taxi driver, nurse etc. We are also trying to make the connection that sometimes the type of land relates to the jobs in a community (Example – rocky terrain in the Canadian Shield is good for mining so lots of jobs related to mining in Sudbury).

– What natural resources are in the community? We have talked about how in Ottawa we have water (from the Ottawa River that is purified so we can drink it) and trees (for some paper and pulp products) and maybe a few quarries for gravel.

– What can people do for fun if they are visiting your community? We have talked about some of the students’ favourite tourist attractions they have visited with their families in Ontario (e.g., Parliament Buildings in Ottawa, Canada’s Wonderland in Toronto, Niagara Falls in Niagara Falls(!), museums, art galleries, parks, etc.)

– How does the community meet the needs of its people? We talked about how people need water, so the community provides us with clean drinking water. As humans ,we need food, so the community builds grocery stores or sets up farmer’s markets so we can buy food. There are also certain services set up to take care of our garbage, recycling, and sewage. Communities make roads for us to travel on and provide other transportation services/links for us to use (e.g., subways, city busses, light rail, taxis, etc.).

A map of Ontario with the community labeled on it.

Remember: The purpose of the brochure will be to inform readers of the chosen community but to also convince them that it would be a great place to visit!

Students will be completing their BROCHURE at school with their partner/group this week … but you are more than welcome to talk to your child and help them find any information (online, at the library, example travel brochures etc.) that they can find on their chosen community to use in their brochure. You can also print out colour pictures at home that your child can bring in and include in their brochure as well. Again, all the writing will be done in partners/groups at school! The due date will be NEXT MONDAY (Nov. 16th).

THANKS for your support!

Remembrance Day Week

Life in the Trenches…

On Friday afternoon, we welcomed a very special guest into our classroom. Catherine Roberts came to talk to the students in to vist Mr. Jackson & Ms. Lewis’ class about her grandfather who fought during the First World War. It was a very moving presentation. You could hear a pin drop in the classroom as Mrs. Roberts described how her grandfather fought in and survived the battle of Vimy Ridge. The students also learned about life in the trenches and the severe hardships that her grandfather and other soldiers had to endure day after day. Mrs. Roberts also brought various objects (for example, a gas mask, a copy of her grandfather’s medical record, a helmet and coat, the medals that he earned, etc.) that she has collected over the years that help bring her stories to life. Her grandfather did survive the war and lived to the age of 85. We thank Mrs. Roberts for helping the students better understand and appreciate what her grandfather and others like him did and are doing so that we may have the life that we have and the freedoms that we enjoy. On Monday, Captain Christopher Daniel will be coming to talk to all of the primary classes about his work in the military.IMG_4180 (2) And on Wednesday we will have an in school Remembrance Day Assembly. Children are encouraged to bring money to school to purchase their own poppies that are being sold on Monday and Tuesday. Please review the word bank pictured to the left with your child. Discussions like these at home with your child are life  enhancing ones.
