Due to an intense winter storm that began early this morning which could bring anywhere from 25cm – 30cm of snow, all student transportation is cancelled today. This means that buses will not run today. Nor will our swim trip. The school remains open. If your child normally takes a bus, you may drop him or her off starting at 9:00 am. If you do so, you must make arrangements to pick him or her up at the end of the day. It is important to arrive early to ensure easy pick-up and that you do not get caught in the traffic jam right at 3:45pm. Also, if your child normally takes the school bus and he or she will not be attending, you do not need to notify the office. We only require notification for those students who normally walk to school. If you must be on the roads today, please drive safely!

Primary Winter Play Day…
![]()
This year’s Primary Winter Play Day will take place on Wednesday, February 17th from 12:30pm-2:45pm . Students in grades 1-3 will enjoy a variety of outdoor activities for the afternoon (with a nice cup of hot chocolate to enjoy afterwards!). Please make sure your child comes to school that day properly dressed to be outside for an extended period of time (waterproof mittens, hat, boots, snowpants, neck warmer, etc.). An extra pair of socks and mittens are recommended as well… just in case they are needed! All students are expected to participate. It should be a fantastic afternoon!
Please note: If the weather does not cooperate, a rain date has been set for Wednesday, February 24th.
Book Sale Field Trip News!

Next week, on Thursday, Feb.18th, we will be walking over to the Kanata United Church to take part in their annual BOOK FAIR! This is a wonderful opportunity for the students to find quality, inexpensive, just-right books for their reading pleasure and to get a little exercise at the same time! This book fair is unique in that two of the rooms are devoted solely to kids’ books. These books are divided into dozens of categories. One of the rooms is for chapter books alone. Students will have some time to look through and handle all of the available kids books at their leisure as we are being given access to the book fair before it actually opens to the general public!
The used books range anywhere from $1-2, so if you would like to send some money with your child that day to buy a book or 2 or 3 you can! I also encourage the students to bring a reusable bag so they can easily carry their books home from the sale.
We will be leaving WEJ around 9:30am and walking along Varley Drive and onto the paths to get to the Kanata United Church (located at 33 Leacock Drive – it is located right next door to Stephen Leacock P.S.) We will be returning to WEJ around 11:15am.
The permission forms will be coming home today so please send them back to school right away (on Tuesday!) so we can make sure that all students can attend and that we have some parent volunteers to walk with us on Thursday! Proceeds from the Book Fair help the church reach out to others including the Kanata Food Cupboard.
For more information about the Kanata United Church Book Fair, please click here.
All activities undertaken on this field trip will be in accordance with OPHEA guidelines.
Report Cards Coming Home Today!
The students have worked very hard this term and it is time to share the results with you. Report cards for Term 1 are going home today! Please review the marks and comments on the report card with your child. Remember that learning skills are as equally important.
There is a section for your child to reflect on his/her best work and to state a goal for improvement for next term. On the back of this section, parents are asked to record what they think their child has improved most in as well as how they plan to help their child. Please detach and return this slip to me at your earliest convenience.
The board does not schedule a formal day or time for parent-teacher interviews this time around. However, if you would still like to meet, please feel free to send me an e-mail (Kelly.Lewis@ocdsb.ca). I will be in contact with parents that I feel I need to see by the end of the week.
Valentine’s Day is Near …
Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! To help celebrate the special occasion, your child may want to give cards to his/her classmates next Thursday, Feb. 11th (the 12th is a PD Day!) While children love giving these cute cards, they love receiving them just as much. With that said, I just thought that I would provide parents with a list of the names of the students in our class this year so that no one gets left out. We’ll celebrate the special day with a card exchange, some activities and a short video! Students are more than welcome to bring in a peanut free treat to share with the class, I will be bringing some goodies in too! Please send your lil’ darling to school in red, pink and white clothing too!
Here are the students in my class: Lynn, Fatima, Adrian, Chingis, Cameron, Sarah, Tristan, Peter, Beyzanur, Monica, Lexi, Ben, Owen, Alec, Dennis, Vincent, Tracy, Eric, Zara, and Sunny
A note from our Junior Students and their teacher Ms. Keeling …
Candy Grams
What are they? A NUT-FREE chocolate and a little card
How does it work? When you buy a candy gram, you write a card for your friend. On Friday, that card will be delivered with a chocolate to your friend. Have more friends? Buy more!
How much? 50 cents each. $5 gets you 10 for a bunch of your friends or siblings
What’s it for? Our class will be donating the money to Free the Children (a non-profit Canadian group)
When can we buy? At 1st lunch Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
Thanks for supporting our fundraising!

NEW Math Unit…
2-D Geometry
In Math, we are starting a unit on 2-D shapes. The goals of this unit are for your child to use shapes to make other shapes, to identify shapes that are congruent (the same size and shape), to identify and compare various polygons (i.e., triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, heptagons, octagons) and sort them by their geometric properties (i.e., number of sides, side lengths, number of interior angles, number of right angles), and to recognize symmetry in shapes, designs and pictures of images. Your child should begin to notice interesting geometric designs in his or her world. You might talk to your child about how these designs have been created. Throughout the unit, you and your child may engage in activities at home such as:
• Your child can look for shape puzzles at home. Look in resources such as newspapers and puzzle books. Your child could bring a puzzle to school to display on a class bulletin board or puzzle table.
• Your child can find and list things around the house that have more than one line of symmetry, and sketch at least 4 of these items and show the lines of symmetry.
• Your child could plan a symmetrical design for one wall of a bedroom or some other room in the house. This might include the placement of pictures or posters on the wall. Your child can draw a sketch of the symmetrical design, draw the line of symmetry, and describe how the design was created.
• Your child can find something at home, such as a rug, a vase, or a bedspread, that has an interesting geometric pattern. Have your child draw the pattern and describe attributes such as congruent shapes, lines of symmetry (e.g., vertical, horizontal, diagonal), and colour. Your child should then describe how the pattern was made. This is called the pattern rule. Your child might take the real object or a drawing of the object to class to share with others.
• Your child can explore some of the online interactive math games listed under Math – Geometry links on this blog
Busses Canceled Today – Wed., Feb. 3rd
Due to freezing rain this morning, all student transportation is cancelled today, Wednesday, February 3rd, 2016. This means that buses will not run in the morning or the afternoon. The school remains open. There is not regular programming.
Please note: If your child normally takes a bus, you may drop him or her off, starting at 9:00 am. If you do so, you must make arrangements to pick him or her up at the end of the day — 3:45 pm (coming a bit earlier will be helpful, so that you are not stuck in a traffic jam in the parking lot) — at the back of the school near the portables. We appreciate your assistance in keeping the front of the school and the office clear for urgent matters.
Also, if your child normally takes the school bus and he or she will not be attending, you do not need to notify the office. We only require notification for those students who normally walk to school.
You may check school bus cancellations and delays here.
If you must be on the roads today, please drive safely. It is extremely slippery out there!
