It was a Short but Sweet Week …

We enjoyed a great Pedestrian Safety presentation by Ms. Tracy on Tuesday morning. She works at the school cross walks. She gave us insightful and helpful information about street and vehicle safety and how to be extra careful when crossing the street and safety precautions to take when walking alone and with friends and family. Her presentation was very interactive and we were thrilled to hear her comment that we were ” the best behaved class that she’s presented to in a long long time!”

While our Gr.3’s have been working hard learning about the Anishinabe, Wendat’s and the craft of taking good jot notes, our Gr. 2’s having been studying movement, simple machines and forces. This past week as a part of our summative task, they had to build a toy car that demonstrated the child’s knowledge of wheels and axles. The students had 3 periods to build and we took a period to test the cars down an incline plane for distance and durability -a friendly competition if you will. Later this week the students will be applying what they have learned in our science unit on Movement by writing a short test. Take a peek below, can you spot your child’s car?

Gr.3 Motion Geometry Test & Social Studies Update

I just wanted to let you know that the students will be writing their unit test on Motion Geometry this Thursday (Mar. 31st)). To help prepare for this test, the students have been completing the related practice questions online at the Nelson Math 3 website on the Chromebooks at school. Feel free to have your child revisit these questions at home before next Thursday if they feel they need the extra review! Here’s the link:

http://www.nelson.com/school/elementary/mathK8/math3/studentcentre/studtryout.html

Once there, simply click on Chapter 14: Patterns and Motion in Geometry, then complete the questions for the first four lessons.

In Social Studies …

social studiesIn Social Studies, we are currently studying Heritage and Identity: Communities in Canada (1780-1850). In this unit, students investigate and describe the communities of early settlers and First Nation peoples in Canada during this time period. The students are currently learning  about the First Nations people in Upper Canada, using mainly the Wendat (Huron) and Anishinabe (Ojibwa) as contrasting examples. The students will also be studying the interactions between the First Nations peoples and new European explorers, and how the First Nations people helped the early European settlers adapt to life in their new home. After the March Break, we will examine what life was like for the early pioneers and some of the major challenges that they faced and how it all compares to or own modern way of living. By the end of the unit, students should be able to describe the different aspects of these respective communities (food, houses, transportation, tools, jobs, family life, clans, etc) and compare and contrast these communities to our own today. The students will also be working on “I Am” poems. This is an exciting cross-curricular assignment where the students will be asked to demonstrate what they learned about the Wendat/Anishinabe/early pioneers by writing in the voice of either a Wendat child, an Anishinabe child, or a pioneer child. I will share these poems with you once they are all completed. Students will also eventually be writing their own aboriginal legends!

Did you know that the word kanata means “village” in Iroquoian? The name Ontario means “beautiful waters” in Iroquoian too!

This & That …

A friendly reminder that Robert Munsch presentations begin next week. The students are working hard in class on their independent reading logs and guided author studies out of their booklets. At home they should be practicing their Book Talk presentations nightly if they are in Gr.2 and if they are in Gr.3 they should be reading their book in front of their parents or sibling to “read like Robert Munsch does.”

Parent support with props and costumes at home is greatly appreciated and be sure to check the front cover of your child’s Robert Munsch Booklet for their exact presentation dates. Some dates were changed for the children involved in the Chess tournament.

Yesterday, Hydro Ottawa was in and did a fascinating presentation on Electricity Safety. The guest speaker, Fern was fabulous and he demonstrated actual experiments, showed a slide show and had a table of artifacts.

Social Studies & Science:

Our Grade 2’s are studying Movement and Simple Machines. Next week they will have a quiz on Movement. What it is. What you can do to make something move and different types of movement. They will also have to look at a busy picture and use different position words to describe what is going on in the photo. Key movement terms are:motion, up, down, back, forth, beside, infront, right, left, over, under, turn, close, near, far, next, corner.

The Grade 3s are studying Early Settlers to Canada with a focus on comparing the Anishinabe and Wendat Tribes. They have just wrapped up their Radial Plate Weaving projects, a form of art particular to this era. This week they will focus on hunting and gathering.

A quick note on math we are studying the characteristics of 3D shapes. The later portion of this week we compared and contrasted the nets and skeletons of prisms and pyramids and looked closely at identifying edges, faces and vertices in other 3D shapes too.

Scholastic Book Orders:

Kindly remember that Scholastic does NOT accept cash. Cheques ONLY. Book orders for the month of March are due March 11th.

Have an awesome weekend!
