ROCK DROP Tomorrow!

The moment they’ve all been waiting for is near! Tomorrow we will be leaving for our quick hike out to Beaver Pond and back.

Parents who indicated that they would like to come for the walk and help supervise are asked to come to my room at 12:30. They kids will be in French class, but Madame has agreed to let them get dressed at 12:30.

Please dress your child for the weather, if we do get rain, we will postpone our walk until Thursday.

We also have our first Golf lesson tomorrow morning, so please send your child with a coat as we will be outside for that and the mornings do seem a little on the chilly side.

We appreciate the donations of panty hose coming in, we are still short about ten pair of “nude or skin” coloured ones. Please, if you have time tonight take a quick peek!

Many thanks!

CTV Ottawa Weather Watchers Drawings

Recently, the students each drew a weather/seasonal picture that was submitted to CTV Ottawa for the program’s daily Weather Watchers feature at the 6pm TV Broadcast. We brainstormed the types of activities that take place during spring, summer and fall, and the students decided on what they wanted to include in their drawings. I thought the students did an amazing job and wanted to share their creations with you (see below). Check here to see if any of our students’ drawings are featured on CTV Ottawa in the coming months!

Fingers crossed some of our kiddos get picked!

Test Info & Life as an Early Settler!

Students are to study their social studies duotang notes in preparation for this Thursday’s unit test on Early Settlers (Anishinabe, Wendat and Pioneer people). We will spend a few classes this week reviewing and preparing for the test in class. Please make sure your child returns his/her social studies duotang to school each day if it is brought home for reviewing. I will be collecting the duotangs at the end of the week along with the unit tests for marking. Students are also wrapping up a cross-curricular poetry writing assignment (I Am poem) and a media literacy assignment (designing packaging for a kid’s toothpaste brand) this week.

Our students experienced a fun-filled day in the Pioneer Village at the MacSkimming Outdoor Education Center last Thursday! What a great way to compliment and add to all that we have learned in the classroom about life as an early settler. Students enjoyed a variety of activities throughout the day: building their own pioneer toy, learning about and doing a variety of early settler chores (parents, you would have been proud of your child!) like tapping trees, sawing wood, carrying water, etc. using antique tools, building a log-cabin as a class, and experiencing what it was like to be a student learning in a one-room schoolhouse! Special thanks go out to our parent volunteers, Alex´s mom, Amala´s mom, Amy´s mom and Lucas´ dad as well as Ms. B and the staff at MacSkimming for helping make this field trip a great success! Here are some pictures from the day:

REMINDER: EQAO Starts on Wednesday

Important Reminder: The 2019 dates for EQAO are MAY 22nd – 24th

Please send your child to school having had a good nights sleep and a healthy and fulfilling breakfast.

In the mean time …

An excellent website to help children and parents through EQAO is; (simply cut and paste)

http://chatt.hdsb.ca/~robertsonce/?OpenItemURL=S075EE46E

To download past EQAO tests:

1) Go to www.eqao.com and enter the English site.

2) Click “Parent Resources” (a blue link at the top of the page

3) Click “Assessment of Reading, Writing and Mathematics, Primary Division (Grades 1–3) and Junior Division (Grades 4–6)”

4) Scroll down until you see the title “Student Assessment Booklets and Scoring Guides (test questions and examples of student answers).” Below this you will see links of past EQAO tests according to year.

5) Once you click on one of the year links, you will be able to download the Student Assessment Booklets (Language 1 – Reading, Language 2 – Writing and Mathematics), the Scoring Guides (which show you what a level 1, 2, 3 and 4 look like) and Multiplication Answer Keys.

Please download a test (or more!) for your child and take some homework time to go over it with them. You can do this throughout the entire year.

Your child will benefit from this review of their language and math skills greatly. You may choose to do as many tests as you like and as much/little preparation as you prefer. It is up to you to mark and review the test with your child.

MATH: Motion Geometry

Today we will start a new mathematics unit on motion geometry. Through daily activities, your child will explore how figures are moved or transformed. Specifically, your child will:

  • Describe movement on a grid.
  • Explore slides, turns, and flips.
  • Perform slides, turns, and flips with concrete materials and pictures.

Figures can be moved in several directions. A slide (translation) can move a figure horizontally (to the left or right), vertically (up or down), or diagonally (on a slant). A turn (rotation) can rotate a figure clockwise or counterclockwise. A flip (reflection) can reflect a figure horizontally or vertically. Your child will learn to describe motion in terms of the direction in which the figure moves.

Here are some suggestions for activities you can do with your child:

  • Have your child find objects at home that slide (for example, a drawer opening and closing), turn (for example, the hands on the clock), or flip (for example, a pancake being turned over). Remember…turns can go both ways – clockwise and counterclockwise.
  • Flips, slides, and turns may also appear in pictures, book covers, clothing designs, wallpaper patterns, board games, or the images on a deck of cards.
  • Play games with your child that involve giving directions, such as Simon Says. For example, one direction could be, “Move 3 steps forward and 2 steps right.”
  • Your child can also play games like checkers and chess to see how slides work in real-life situations.
  • Your child can create his or her own patterns or designs, using flips, slides, and turns

Reminder of Field Trip This Thursday

Our class and students in Mr. Jackson and Ms. Parsa’s grade 3 classes are going to the MacSkimming Outdoor Education Center this Thursday, May 16th to participate in the Canadian History: Life in Early Canada program.

Canadian History – Life in Early Canada

During this full-day program, students will have a chance to discover what life would have been like here during the early 1900s. Students will have an opportunity to discuss and compare the lives of the First Nations to that of the European settlers during the early 1900s. Students will visit a one-room schoolhouse, build a log-cabin, make their own pioneer toy and use some antique tools such as yolks and ice tongs, in this hands-on discovery of life as an early settler.

We will be leaving the school immediately after attendance (by 9:30am). Please ensure your child is at school on time on Thursday. We will be returning to WEJ around 3:00pm. A big thank-you goes out to our parent volunteers for coming with us on this field trip: Andrea’s mom, Samuel’s mom, Arianne’s mom, and Yi’s mom. Parent volunteers are to park in the upper WEJ parking lot at 8:55am (before the busses arrive in the morning), sign in at the office, and make their way up to the classroom by 9:15am.

On Thursday, all parents must ensure that their child packs a litterless lunch. We will not leave any garbage behind at the outdoor education center. If there is any garbage, it will be put back in lunch bags and thrown out at home.

We strongly recommend that the students:

  • Bring a reusable water bottle
  • Wear appropriate footwear
  • Wear appropriate clothing for the weather. (It will be cooler in the forest than in the city so they recommend a warm sweater or light jacket).
  • Wear sunscreen
  • (It will not yet be time for bug spray so students do not need to bring that)

We are looking forward to an awesome day of outdoor learning and experiencing life as an early settler!

Ms. Lewis, Mr. Jackson and Ms. Parsa
