Pioneer Fun! WOW – What a Day!

What a wonderful day we had today in room 216! We stepped back, way back into Pioneer Times! At 9:25am sharp, we part took in an OCDSB virtual field trip to a Pioneer Village where we heard about the pioneer lifestyle -chores, crops, food storage, buildings, etc. Then we made butter in our very own classroom. The students were skeptical at first, but it turned out amazing! Later in the day after Math (working on fractions right now), we tapped an actual Maple tree and the sap began to run right away into the bucket! In Arts in the afternoon, we followed up with more Pioneer fun by breaking out into small groups and experiencing how Pioneer children played – tic-tac-toe out of pebbles, building a whirlygig, yarn weaving, and butter sampling. It was an eye-opening opportunity whereby students came to understand how simple life once was before electricity.  We ended the day by saying goodbye to one of our sweet classmates who is moving away. Thanks to those who voluntarily sent in treats – you are a gracious group and I didn’t even have to ask.

I, Ms. Brown and the whole class thank you!

Charcoal Art – An Amazing Trip Around the World

A few weeks ago, the students worked with charcoal in art class to draw a variety of famous structures from around the world. We talked about how charcoal is a wonderful art tool to use when creating works that have dark and light areas or tones (value) as well as shades of grey. I had printed off a variety of dramatic black and white photographs of various famous structures that the students could try to draw. I was very pleased with the striking images the students created! Parents, grab a cup of coffee on this cold Monday morning and take a trip around the world and enjoy these wonders of the world!
