The students will have a test on multiplication and division this Thursday. If students can represent multiplication questions by using a variety of strategies (e.g., with an array, repeated addition, number line, t-chart, or multiplication), and demonstrate an understanding of the basic multiplication facts from 0-7, they will be just fine! For division, knowing how to divide or share numbers into equal groups (by sketching a picture or using manipulatives if needed) will be important concepts to have mastered. And, aside from getting the correct answer on a math word problem solving question, the students need to be able to explain their thinking. ie. “First I…, then, next, and finally I solved the problem by….”. Solutions to word problems should also include a picture (e.g. t-chart, array or sketch, etc.) and numbers (the actual numbers being calculated). Your child can complete some of the practice questions online at the Nelson Math 3 site to help prepare for the test. Click here and click on Chapter 9: Multiplication (Lessons 1-6) or Chapter 10: Division (Lessons 1-2). Have your child complete the practice questions and check his/her answers for these lessons in these chapters. We will do some of these on the Chromebooks in class…but it does not hurt to review some more at home! Math Three Under the Sea is also an excellent site to visit for review of these concepts. Your child should also continue to try to improve his/her speed of recall of multiplication and division facts (using flashcards, playing some of the games at the sites linked to the class blog (here for example), etc.).
